Come and get your hip hop groove on in our full year (September-May) JHop program for ages 3-13. This program follows a progressive curriculum in which students will perform in the recital and also have the opportunity to explore student-led choreography. JHop has been expertly developed by artistic director Jenna Brenan (BEd, AFLCA, PPNF) in collaboration with a variety of dance educators who teach hip hop programming to children of all ages and abilities. All our classes are taught by highly trained instructors who have certified in JDance® (The foundational program for the JHop Curriculum) and have a solid foundation in both dance technique and best teaching practices. Dance to your favourite kid friendly, parent approved music while learning the latest hip hop moves! In JHop, you will explore dance concepts, gain coordination, and increase strength and flexibility.

Our program focuses on Anne Green Gilbert’s BrainDance research and her teachings on conceptual dance education, providing a foundation for a strong where new dance concepts will be explored monthly where new dance concepts will be explored monthly. Creative dance, imagination, and expression are combined with developmentally appropriate movement, music, and Hip Hop dance skills to create a class that is fun for all!

This class is part of the Performance Program and will perform in Recital.

Dance is more than a series of steps. Our programs use a holistic approach that provides our young dancers with a brain compatible learning environment. Our conceptual approach to dance education ensures our students move with purpose on the dance floor and through life. Our goal is to shape each student into a Holistic Dancer who is a:

  • Skilled Technician

  • Critical Thinker

  • Successful Collaborator

  • Inventive Creator

Each class includes: a BrainDance warm up, concept based exploration, Hip Hop skill development and choreography, a fitness based game or obstacle course and ends with a rhythm development activity.

No dance previous experience necessary.

New families joining our program will need to complete the Full-Year Placement Recommendation Form to receive a class placement prior to being able to register. You will be notified via email once your class placement has been added to your account.

Full-year commitment

At J’Adore Dance we view our JHop dancers as part of our community. As a community, we expect families who enter our JHop program to be ready to commit to a full year program, including attending in-class sharings throughout the dance year (during regularly scheduled class time) and a special theatre recital (dates listed in Policy Handbook). Our theatre recital allows special friends and family members to view our dancers’ hard work and give your dancer the opportunity to perform on stage! If you are unsure if your family can make a full year commitment we highly recommend registering in one of our sessional preschool or kids programs.

Levels 1, 2 and 3: Primary JHop for ages 3-7

Our Level 1, 2 and 3 JHop classes has been designed with our primary in mind! In these levels our goal is to build confidence and body awareness, inspire creativity and expression, while developing physical literacy skills in our youngest dancers. The program focuses on Hip Hop dance with a focus on fundamental dance skills that will be the base of future hip hop technique. Dancers will explore funky kid friendly beats, images, and props to develop their dance ability. Teachers will also work with young dancers on classroom routine and etiquette, taking turns, and working with others. This program is recommended for children who have already had a positive experience in one of our parent and tot or preschool programs and are ready for a full year dance program.

Level 1: For children who will be 3 by no later than September 30

Level 2: For children who will be 4 or 5 by no later than September 30

Level 3: For children who will be 5, 6 or 7 by no later than September 30 (5 year olds may register by teacher recommendation only)

Levels 4 through 7: Senior JHop for ages 6-13:

Our levels 4 through 7 JHop classes are for kids who want the option to explore and create expressively while working on progressive hip hop dance technique. Kids in these levels will be challenged to solve movement problems, create dances using a variety choreographic structures and movement concepts, while learning developmentally appropriate hip hop skills. Dancers will explore a variety of music, images and props to develop their dance ability while learning how to collaborate and work with other children. Teachers in our program do not spend classes drilling technique or steps. The class activities and exercises have been developed to ensure dancers are able to progress their dance skills in a fun environment that keeps children engaged and excited to dance and learn. This program is recommended for children who are ready to make a full year commitment to a multifaceted dance program.

All children develop in their own time, at their own pace. As such all of our classes are leveled based on a combination of appropriate age groupings and skill level. This ensures all children are in a class where they will be suitably challenged and successful. Returning families will have received a level recommendation at the end of the previous dance season.

Annie

Instructor

Annie has danced since she could walk and it has always been her true passion. Having had the privilege of training in many dance styles including finishing her Grade 6 RAD and Checchetti ballet, ISTD Jazz and Tap, she furthered her education, studied contemporary and obtained a Bachelor (HONS) Degree in Dance and Choreography at the University of Chichester in England. Finishing university Annie successfully obtained a position to dance in the closing ceremonies of the London Olympics 2012, "It was the biggest performance of my life!" The creative nature that dance can ignite has always interested her and as such choreography has become one of Annie's main focuses. Since joining J'Adore Dance she has had the pleasure of watching children delve into the creative processes of dance and explore choreography in a whole different light. She completed her Certification in Integrative Dance from Rhythm Works, Intellidance and maintains her First Aid and CPR. "The imagination and innate creativity of children never ceases to amaze me; I look forward to furthering my career and sharing my passion for dance with as many people as possible".

Lea

Intern

Lea has been training in hip-hop for 7 years competitively. She has attended numerous different studios such as Casey’s Dance Centre, Edmonton Dance Factory and has now been training at the Kore Dance Studio for the past three years. Graduating from Holy Trinity High School in 2019, Lea was given many opportunities to teach dance during school flex sessions. She has also taught numerous Freedays at the Kore Dance Studio.

In 2017, Lea and her duet partner Lovenia Bretania made Represent Dance Competition Finals for their first year of competition. Lea was also awarded Senior Hip-Hop Dancer of the Year at Edmonton Dance Factory, and was given a scholarship from the studio.

At Edmonton Dance Factory, Lea trained under choreographer Richard Andries. With her past few years at Kore she has also trained under numerous choreographers such as Edrick Ochoco, Emily Tubbs-Way, Josh Candy, Randall Mella and Ally Kinaschuk.

This past year has been an incredible milestone for Lea as she will now begin competing with the hip-hop group, Cool Giraffes, under choreographers Randall Mella and Thomas Boivin. The Cool Giraffes have recently competed at the World Hip-Hop International competition, winning first place in Canada in Montreal, and making semi-finals for World Championships in Phoenix, Arizona. Lea is ecstatic to be given the opportunity to travel, compete, train and learn more about the roots of Hip-Hop and dance with the people she loves. Lea is excited to be part of the internship program this year at J'Adore Dance.
